The Easter weekend in Australia, with Anzac day included within it, it was a great opportunity to do some big K’s on the bike especially as the Dirtworks 100k race was the following weekend. However the weather had other ideas, Friday I went out with the boys on a bridges ride where we went across all the bridges in Sydney and took advantage of the lack of traffic and even rode across the main deck of the Sydney Harbor Bridge which was amazing.
Saturday was raining, however still went for the El Presidente ride in the morning with the bunch, but it was cold and wet and pretty rubbish. We got as far as Terrey Hills and just turned around and came home again as it was pouring with rain. A quick coffee and everyone headed off.
Sunday was a Somersby Loop + Bobbin Head which was a long day, 145k in the saddle, however it was a great ride and we threw in Bobbo for good measures just to be hard.
Monday however was when it all came to pieces, the weather was rubbish but myself and a few boys from NoBMoB went out to scout the DW track, it was pouring rain all morning on the drive up and should of just turned around and gone back to bed. Got to Wisemans and kitted up and headed out into the rain. The trail had seen a lot of rain, there were large puddles everywhere and you could feel the grit getting caught into the drivetrain. As we were descending down the convict trail I had a fairly slow speed crash which resulted into a OTB, didnt think much of it and carried on riding. After some 4 hours for 50k covered we got back to the cars, no brake pads left on both front and rear brakes and I was just happy to get in the warmth of the car, my wrist was sore but nothing to bad.
Fast Forward 48 hours and I was in Sydney Hospital having X-Rays on my right hand due to a suspected broken scaphoid. Praying for the best but knowing the worst, it wa declared that I had “clinically broken” my scaphoid and had to be in cast for a week, no Dirtworks 100k for me. 7 Days later and I was hopeful of getting out of cast as the swelling had gone down but there was still some soreness in my wrist. My suspicions were that it was indeed broken and a further X-Ray and CT Scan on the wrist revealed that I had put a small fracture in the middle of the scaphoid bone and that I was going to be looking at another 4 weeks in cast.
To say I was disappointed was an understatement, not only could I not ride, I couldnt drive and do a lot of other tasks like writing for example. So that was my easter weekend, started with intentions of some serious K’sand ended with a broken wrist.
